2024 Reflections: Embracing Challenges and Building for the Future

As we step into 2025, I find myself reflecting on the lessons learned in 2024—a year that, although slower than expected in terms of major projects, has been one of personal growth, renewed purpose, and significant milestones for Cooper & Blake Architecture.

While the year presented some challenges—particularly in working with smaller, more complex projects—I found joy in these hurdles. The nature of these projects, from intricate renovations to creative problem-solving for clients with specific needs, has reaffirmed my passion for design that responds to the unique qualities of both people and place. I believe this is where the true art of architecture lies—finding ways to make the most of the constraints and creating something special within them.

One project that stands out is a unique renovation in Newtown. Working with beautiful  clients, we’re transforming an existing home into something that truly reflects their vision and lifestyle. These smaller, yet deeply meaningful projects are reminders that architecture is not just about building from the ground up but also about reimagining and reinterpreting what already exists, making it better for the people who will live in it.

Beyond the projects themselves, 2024 allowed me to broaden my impact in other ways. I dedicated a significant portion of my time to networking, participating in industry events, and sharing my knowledge through mentoring and guest judging panels.

One of the highlights was founding in partnership The Renovators Workshop, where I had the pleasure of co-hosting curated full-day workshops for homeowners seeking expert guidance for their upcoming home projects. The joy of collaborating with fellow industry professionals, local businesses and homeowners alike reinforced my belief in the power of education and thoughtful decision-making when it comes to creating spaces that truly serve their owners.

Another incredibly rewarding experience was my involvement with Deakin University. As a guest judge for the final year masters design unit and as an expert for a research workshop focused on housing typologies for victims of domestic violence. Reading survivors' stories was gut-wrenching. It was also inspiring to work alongside so many committed professionals who are striving to make a real difference through design. I look forward to the progress these initiatives will bring and am again in awe of how architecture can play a significant role in improving lives and communities.

n the latter half of 2024, I took the time to refine the mission and vision for Cooper & Blake Architecture. As a practice, we are more focused than ever on our commitment to creating homes that are not just beautiful but deeply personal and tailored to the unique needs of each client. This clarity is reflected in our Holistic Home Method, a process that ensures every project is approached with intention and care from the outset. Whether it's a new build or a renovation, our aim is to help our clients build homes that are truly made for the life they want to lead—homes that foster connection, sustainability, and a deep sense of belonging.

Looking ahead to 2025, I’m excited to see the path we’re on.

We’ve already received several enquiries for projects that will challenge us to dig deeper into the design process, and I’m confident that we’ll be able to stay true to our mission in these collaborations. Most importantly, I’m thrilled to continue working with clients who share our values and trust us to create homes that reflect their unique vision.

Additionally, 2025 marks the (soon to be) launch of our Find Your Why Workbook, a tool I’ve developed from the Holistic Home Reports service. It’s designed for homeowners who want to delve into what truly matters to them in the design of their space. Through a series of reflective exercises and prompts, the workbook guides you on a journey to uncover your home’s deeper purpose and ensure that your design is built on a solid foundation of intention.

As I continue to work with incredible clients, I also hope to take on larger collaborations in the form of social or community housing projects. The experience of working on meaningful projects in the past year has reignited my desire to contribute to social good, and I look forward to exploring opportunities that can make a positive impact on our community.

In closing, while 2024 may have been slower in terms of large-scale projects, it was a year that allowed me to refine my practice and grow in unexpected ways. I’m entering 2025 with renewed energy, an excited outlook for the challenges and opportunities ahead, and a commitment to staying true to the values that define Cooper & Blake Architecture: creating thoughtful, sustainable, and deeply personal homes that stand the test of time.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. I’m excited to share what the future holds.
